Wound Care Compounded Medications

Skin is the body’s most commonly injured tissue, but it is also the body’s main protective barrier. That means that wound healing is very important not only for the repair of the wound itself, but also to keep the skin intact and able to provide protection. Chronic wounds can subject an individual to generalized inflammatory cascades that overwhelm the body’s defenses, affecting many organs and possibly leading to death.

Per a prescription, our compounding pharmacist can formulate a customized medication to treat the patient’s specific type of wound. When it comes to wound care, having the right base can be clinically significant: Depending on the wound type, ointment, cream or gel might be the right base in which to deliver the prescribed blend of active ingredients. For example, if a wound needs to be cleaned by rinsing, a gel base is ideal because it is water-soluble and can be removed from the wound by irrigation. Since cleaning a wound creates the possibility of disrupting new tissue growth, using the appropriate base for medication is a must.

Aside from gels, creams and similar delivery methods, another dosage form that can be useful for wound care is the “polyox bandage.” Also known as a mucosal bandage, the polyox bandage can be moistened and applied to the wound even if exudate is present. The polyox bandage both delivers the medication of your choice, and also provides a barrier to protect the wound as it heals.

CFS Pharmacy’s compounding pharmacist can work with practitioners to develop a customized wound care solution that fits the type of wound and helps promote faster healing.
