Frequently Asked Questions

What is compounding?

Compounding combines traditional pharmacy practice of formulating medications with the latest medical knowledge and state-of-the-art technology, allowing specially trained pharmacists to prepare customized medications to meet each patient’s specific needs. The demand for professional compounding has increased as healthcare professionals and patients realize that the limited number of strengths and dosage forms that are commercially available do not meet the needs of many patients and that these patients often have a better response to a customized dosage form. Our service helps patients and pets in need of a drug that is not readily available through traditional means. Your prescriber will work closely with our pharmacist to create a preparation that is more suitable for your specific needs. This could result in increased compliance and treatment success that would lead to overall better health. Click here for more info.

What kind of drug ingredients are found in compounded medications?

We utilized the same FDA approved ingredients found in many commercially available medications. We use these pharmaceutical ingredients to compound our formulations. We use stringent quality control in selecting the ingredients for our formulations including pharmaceutical ingredients from only from FDA registered and GMP certified manufacturers. Analysis is performed by each of our suppliers on each chemical lot. You can have confidence knowing we are using the best ingredients.

We will make every attempt to call the patient after receiving the prescription and discuss payment and shipping options. Since we will not process the prescription without the patient's approval first. Patients are welcome to contact our representatives at any time.

Will my prescription be covered by my insurance?

We currently do not accept prescription insurance plans. However, you will find that our pricing is very competitive and in many cases, the same or lower than what many insurance companies will charge for your co-pays.

How long will it take for my prescription to be filled?

Commercially available medications will be shipped in 1 business day. For compounded medications, most preparations will ship within 1 to 2 days based on availability. Prescription orders pending prescriber's approval will be processed immediately upon approval.

How can I get a price for my prescription?

Each prescription is made specifically to your doctor's specification and the ingredients may vary. To ensure an accurate price, we prefer a copy of your prescription before we can provide any pricing. However, we can provide you with pricing over the phone or by submitting the requested information by clicking here. If you are sending us a copy of your prescription, a representative will contact you with a price. Your prescriber can also provide us with a prescription but you are not obligated to fill your prescription with us.

Can CareFirst Specialty Pharmacy Bill My Insurance?

Although we do not bill your insurance provider, we do provide our patients with a Universal Claim Form by which they may submit to their insurance for possible reimbursement directly to them. Many insurance companies require the compounding pharmacy to be accredited and some specific insurance companies require their individual credentialing like United Heathcare. We at CareFirst are nationally accredited and are credentialed by United Healthcare. We are also available to help in any way that we can to expedite the process or to offer advice if you experience problems. In many cases with our competitive prices the co-payment for compounded medications if approved generally is the same or more than the actual cost of the medication for many patients.
